William Osborne Tucker

William Osborne “Bill” Tucker, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 6, 2024 at Centra Health-Lynchburg.

Born on January 21, 1936 in Lynchburg, VA, Bill was the son of William Osborne and Kathleen Burford Tucker.  Following his graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1957, he enlisted in the US Army and was based in Iceland where he developed a strong respect for central heating.  After returning from the service, Bill began a career in banking where he served as a Senior Vice President at Central Fidelity Bank.  After his retirement from the bank, Bill purchased J.W. Wood Wholesale Foods. He served many years on the board of the Salvation Army Lynchburg and also enjoyed being a summer substitute driver for Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg.  He was an avid tennis player at Oakwood Country Club.  After retiring for a second time, he wrote two books during his seventies and started taking art classes in his eighties which opened a new world of enjoyment.  He found his most joy on solitary walks in the mountains of Amherst and Nelson Counties.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, William Osborne Tucker, III.

He is survived by his wife, Gay Coffey Tucker; his son Bailey Drummond Tucker (Susan) of Raleigh; grandchildren Gina, Mallory and Will; brother Ben Tucker and sister Julia Meeks (Jimmy) and several beloved nieces and nephews.

At Bill’s request there will be no service.  A private family service will be held at a later date.  Those wishing to make a memorial gift are asked to consider Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg, the Salvation Army Lynchburg or a charity of their choice.
