William Pendleton (Penny) Shephard, 80, of Amherst, died Thursday, March 2nd, 2017. He was the husband of Joan Berckman Shephard for 45 years.
Mr. Shephard was born June 6, 1936, in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Admiral Wiley Shephard and Eunice Hensley Shephard. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Douglas, Kathleen Fite, and Isabelle Campbell Wilson.
He was a graduate of Big Island High School. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during peacetime. He was retired from Shephard’s Market in Big Island, which he owned and operated for many years. Following retirement he worked at Mays Farm Service/Southern States and at Tharp Funeral Home as a funeral assistant. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Monroe where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School Teacher. He held many different positions at the various churches where he was a member including serving as a Lay Minister.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Robert Shephard, of Bedford; several people that were very near and dear to Penny’s heart: Kim and Jimmy Beabeau and their son, Cooper; Penny’s honorary granddaughter, Sasha Lewis; Nelton and Mary Cumbie, and Rick and Nita Valiente.
A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017, at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Monroe, with the Reverends Glynn Coleman and Mickey Ryan officiating. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
