William Russell Chambers, 77, of Lynchburg died on Monday, July 10, 2017. Bill was the son of the late Edith McWane and Samuel Allen Chambers.
After graduating from E. C. Glass High School, he attended the University of Virginia, earning a bachelor’s degree. He then received a master’s degree from UVA’s Darden School of Business. Bill returned to Lynchburg and went to work for the C.B. Fleet Company, Inc. His extraordinary contribution to Fleet over fifty years included serving as President and Chairman of the Board. Bill also served on the boards of Centra Health, Suntrust Bank, Pastoral Counseling Services of Central Virginia and Lynchburg Neighborhood Development.
A soft-spoken man with a wry sense of humor and a love of the outdoors, Bill enjoyed spending time at his farm “Hope Dawn” in Bedford County. His passion for that rural landscape was evident to everyone who knew him well. Bill was an avid fisherman, a crackerjack bird hunter, and a gifted woodworker.
In addition to his wife of fifty-four years, Elsie Forsyth Chambers, Bill is survived by his two sons, William Russell Chambers, Jr., his wife Rhonda and their son Logan of Birmingham, Alabama and Douglas Allen Chambers and his children Katherine and Dean of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by his twin brother Samuel Allen Chambers, Jr. and his wife Bettye of Lynchburg.
Bill’s family will be at 1416 Northwood Circle on Friday, July 14, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Peakland Baptist Church on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
