William Starke Mundy Iii

William Starke Mundy III, known as Starke, of Amherst County was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 20, 1939, and died on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Lynchburg General Hospital. His late parents were William S. Mundy Jr. and Virginia Winfree Mundy. His wife of 39 years, Margaret D. Mundy survives. He grew up in Lynchburg but moved to Amherst and the county that he loved as an adult.

Starke cherished family, but none more than his daughter Jennifer Mundy Brasko, her husband RJ, his grandchildren Reinhard, Starke and Max all of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He adored children but none more than his grandchildren, the many nieces and nephews and their families. As the oldest of six children, he loved family gatherings and sibling antics. He particularly enjoyed the tradition of birthday parties and Christmas gatherings of the whole family. He is also survived by siblings Margaret Peggy Mosby and BK Mundy of Lynchburg, John (Annette) Mundy of Greensboro, NC, and Elizabeth Mundy and Gary Henley of Ashland, Virginia. His sister Ann Cleveland Mundy predeceased him.

Starke graduated from the Virginia Episcopal School, The University of Virginia and Washington and Lee University Law School. He served in the U.S. Army and Naval Reserves as an officer. He was in private law practice for many years before joining the Commonwealth Attorney’s office in Amherst County. He retired as Commonwealth Attorney, a job which he loved, serving the citizens of Amherst County and working with the Sheriff, deputies, Town of Amherst and State police.

Starke had many interests over the years and pursued them enthusiastically. He was junior state Skeet champion in 1953 and 1954, raised cattle as a young adult, hunted throughout his life including four trips to Africa, rode motorcycles and always told jokes. Starke was a hunter education instructor and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, long time member of the Issac Walton League and Hill City Master Gardeners and ex-president of Monroe Ruritan Club.  He loved a good joke, and bad ones, and could laugh at himself. He will be remembered as a gentle bear of a man with great humility that belied a strong intellect and sentimental nature for family and friends.

A graveside service for Starke will be held at 2:00 p.m.  on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Spring Hill Cemetery.
