William T. Phillips, age 102, died January 23, 2022. Born to Thomas Phillips and Emma Lewis Marsh Phillips, he was a Lynchburg native. Bill was employed by Lynchburg Foundry Company for 38 years after graduating Virginia Tech in 1941. He was an industrial and mechanical engineer and became a professional engineer in 1964. Bill served 4 years in the army during WW II, achieving the rank of captain. He was a long-time member of Court Street United Methodist Church. He became a water color painter after his retirement and was a member of the Lynchburg Art Club. He was an avid golfer and played up into his 90s. Bill thoroughly enjoyed bridge and was a happy member of the Lynchburg Duplicate Bridge Club. He was a Silver Life Master, embraced new conventions with enthusiasm and played until he was over 100 years old. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Carolyn Hammond Phillips, and all three of his younger siblings, John Perrow Phillips, Mary Lewis Phillips Hayt, and Nancy Phillips Perkins. He is survived by a son, Stephen Thomas Phillips and wife Dorothy, of Hampton, Virginia; a daughter, Janet Phillips Dunford and husband Mike, of Forest, Virginia; grandson, Mark Dunford and wife, Stephanie, of Apex, North Carolina and their daughter, Riley; granddaughter, Jennifer Dunford Khazai and husband, Ali, of McLean, Virginia and their two sons, Kameron and Aidan. Bill’s life was one well-lived.
