William “Bill” Voris Hemphill, 90, died on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. He was the loving husband of the late Doris Audrey Nelp Hemphill for fifty-four years.
Born July 8, 1924 in Franklin, Indiana, Bill attended Franklin College where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War from 1943 until 1946, specifically fighting on Tarawa Island in the South Pacific.
His lifelong profession was in the automobile business, including ownership of Bill Hemphill Motors in Sanford, Florida and Hemphill Buick Opel in Lynchburg.
Bill was a volunteer with Junior Achievement, The Speech and Hearing Clinic, Society of St. Andrew, and Centra Health, all in Lynchburg. He also served as a Deacon and Elder at numerous churches throughout his life. He had the unique distinction of serving as President of Rotary Club International in Franklin, Indiana, Sanford, Florida, and Lynchburg, Virginia, and received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award twice. Bill was also a faithful B.I.L. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
A devoted family man and an avid people-person, Bill was much loved by everyone he met, including the special people who cared for him at Westminster Canterbury.
In addition to his wife and parents, Bill was preceded in death by his grandson, John Cary Williams.
Left behind to cherish Bill’s memory are his four children: Thomas N. Hemphill and his wife, Marie, Stanley V. Hemphill and his wife, Debbie, Dena L. Brisby and her husband, Byron, and Susan H. Williams and her husband, Frank; ten grandchildren: Anne Lown and her husband, Andrew, Matthew Hemphill Reiss and his wife, Melissa, Christopher Hemphill, Jefferson Hemphill, Byron Brisby, Jr. and his wife, Heather, Jennifer Brisby, Maria Williams, Patricia Dewey and her husband, Derick, Meredith Talian and her husband, Luke, and F. Kemp Williams, III; and five great-grandchildren: Madeline Brisby, Byron Brisby, III, Jack Brisby, Wyatt Reiss, and Emmitt Reiss.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dennis Roberts officiating. A reception for family and friends will take place after the service.
