William Walter Carson, Sr. passed on Monday April 3, 2023. He was born January 10, 1941 in Bedford, VA to the late Charlie and Fannie Quarles and Louise Carson High. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by Dorothy Carson.
William, also known as Billy, graduated in 1960 from Susie Gibson High School where he played football and baseball. Upon graduation he worked at “Auto-Dine” restaurant (formerly the Terrace House), then at Bunker Hill meat packing plant before joining the staff at Rubatex. He worked diligently to rise through the ranks to become a successful salesman.
He was an avid pillar in the Bedford recreational sports community, devoting many years to coaching both baseball (Rubatex) and football (Bedford Falcons and Rebels) little league teams. He also played first base in the local adult fast pitch softball league.
He was a committed supporter of Liberty High School sports alongside his partner in crime, Bill Davis.
In June of 1960 he married his high school sweetheart Jackie Dyke. They went on to have three children, Vanessa Brown (Kenneth), William Carson Jr. (Cathy) and Rodney Carson (Kelly) and special sister-in-law/daughter Gaynell Ferris (Cleve). He is survived by four grandchildren: Ashley Tanner (Keion), Alexis Cardwell (David), Hunter Carson, and Taylor Carson. He was the Godfather of Tanisha Mitchell (Cecelia). Billy is also survived by nine siblings, Charlie E. Quarles Jr. (Olethia), William J. Quarles (Mozell), Richard M. Quarles (Brenda), Edna Bryant, Diane Arrington, Audrey Jackson (Lonnie), Evelyn Floyd (Sam), Robert Carson (Rosa) and Wesley Carson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles Dyke (Morlana), Roger Dyke (Claudia), Lindell Dyke (Linda), Henry Van Dyke (Janel), Paul Royal (Donna), Patty Hubbard, Carolyn Dudley; and a host of countless relatives, friends, and adopted children.
Billy was an active member of the Bedford community serving on various committees. He was a long-time member of Washington Street Baptist Church serving in many capacities including as a Trustee, Sunday school superintendent, member of the gospel choir, and Deacon. His favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing, cheering on his Dallas Cowboys and Virginia Cavaliers, playing with his dogs, and loving on his four grandchildren.

A celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Chapel. A visitation will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in the Virginia Memorial Park.
