William Walter Firkin

William Walter Firkin died in the evening of October 23, 2012. He was 101 years old. His beloved wife of 78 years preceded him in death in 2010. Her long, suffering disease robbed him of his precious wife, but did not rob her of his continued love and devotion.

He is survived by three children and their spouses: Virginia and Norman Burns, Kenneth Jerry and Barbara Firkin, Mary-Lee and S. E. \"Tim\" Hickman, Jr. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, a sister, Harriette Anne Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was a gentle, honest, and humble man with an inner strength and a strong morality. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and was an example of how a human being can make a conscious decision to be better \"" to do better. He took great pride in his skills as a mechanist, and would successfully tackle the most difficult of projects. He not only knew the value of hard work, he knew the intrinsic value of family and friends. He lived a long life, but was always young in mind and spirit.

Walter used his life lessons to uplift and encourage others. He loved God, his wife, his children, and his friends. He loved Heritage Baptist Church and the members of its congregation, and would want to recognize a few of his special friends, his heroes, whom enabled him to live independently in his own home. These persons are: Timothy and Maria Anderson, Dr. James Blackburn, Joyce Ewers, Steve and Denise Grandstaff, Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Irvine, Ernie and Bonnie Lynn, Everette and Lynn Mason, Dilip Parikh, and Shelby and Gayle Phipps.

His family will be forever grateful for the love and care showered upon our father.
