Winston “Porter” Hurt passed away on May 1, 2016 at the Privette Home in Lynchburg, Va.
Born in Bedford, VA., Jan 3, 1922, he lived most of his 94 years in the place he loved, Bedford.
He was the only son of the late Benjamin Porter Hurt and Lula Craig Hurt. He shared his life with his three sisters, who are all deceased: Virginia Tweedy Hamlett, Mildred Crouch and Barbara Ann Garroghty.
Porter was married for 63 years to the late Mazie Lacy Hurt. She was the love of his life. They had one child, a daughter: Carol who lives with her husband, James Kendrick in Lynchburg, VA.
Porter served in the National Guard and the US Navy. Serving for his country took him and his wife, to the big New York City where they lived for a few years. After military service they moved back to Bedford.
Porter loved to fix anything mechanical and later in life he was led to buy a business from a friend in Roanoke, Va. He turned a failing business into a profitable business, selling sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, and small appliances, new and old. He was known for his repair work. Years later he sold the business and retired.
Loving the outdoors, he and his wife would work in the yard together and could grow the best tomatoes. Porter would always take time to watch his Nascar racing and animal shows on tv.
At the age of 94 he told his daughter he had lived a full and happy life.
The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford on Tuesday, May, 3, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the mausoleum in Virginia Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m
