Mary McDaniel Payne

March 2, 1941 - December 15, 2022

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, Mary McDaniel Payne affectionately known as “Mary Massie” gained her heavenly wings. Mary was born on March 2, 1941 to the late Silas G. and Mary K. McDaniel. She was the oldest of nine children.

She was educated in the Amherst County School System. She held various occupations, with the last one being a caregiver to children. She was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church in Amherst, Va. She loved to cook, sew and hit the road (shopping, going to the beach and visiting family who lived out of town.)

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son Michael L. McDaniel and one grandson Dexter E. Payne, Jr. one great granddaughter Remiah A. Powell two sisters Alma M. Gentry and Beatrice M. Booth.

She leaves to celebrate her life, her loving husband of 61 years Willie E. Payne, Sr. Five children Willie E. Payne, Jr., Kevin A. Payne, Sr., Dexter E. Payne, Sr. (Pebbles), Tracy T. Payne and Cory O. Payne. Four sisters Louise M. Smith, Susie M. Nappier (George) Florence M. Mays (Rev. M.D. Mays) Felda M. Alexander (Roger) Two brothers Silas E. McDaniel (Joan) and Joseph L. McDaniel (Carolyn). Thirteen Grandchildren, Jesse, Jemicka, Markus, ReSheka, Kevin, Jr. , Johnathan, Nicole, Annitra, Mahogany, Kairi, Kamari, Lakyia, and Adrian. Twelve Great Grand Children, Seven Sisters in laws, Three Brothers in laws, Two Fur babies Kody and GiGi, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 P.M. on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg.
