Moonyeen Claire "Penny" Hinton
Moonyeen “Penny” Hinton passed on Saturday January 21, 2023 while in the presence of family and following a lovely Christmas holiday which was always a time dear to her heart due to her generous nature of giving and doing for others. Penny was born in Lynchburg on Monday June 28, 1943 to Loxley Kyle Daniel and Lillian Vernon Cheatwood, who named her after a star in the movie Smiling Through. Her family moved to Maryland to live on the water when she was in elementary school, and she graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1961, married and later returned to Lynchburg to raise her children. She worked as an orthodontic assistant and later as a home health care nurse. In her retired years, she most enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and granddogs and spending time with her cherished friends. She traveled to Maryland, West Virginia, Gatlinburg, and the North Carolina beaches, but also found much happiness in going on a picnic, tending to her plants, keeping the birds well fed, reading, and working on jigsaw puzzles. Penny fought a courageous 1 ½ year battle against pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her daughter Sandy Duis and husband Mac, grandchildren Will and Ruby and granddog Teddy and son Jeff Small and wife Suzanne, grandchildren Kaitlyn and Lauren and granddog Percy. She did not want people crying over her loss but rather to do something kind and in service for others. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in her name to the Warton Memorial Foundation Melody Garden, a project outside the library in the town of Bedford that is being designed with help from her grandson Will, or to Meals on Wheels of Lynchburg.
