Donald VanBuren Carter
Donald VanBuren Carter, passed away on June 28, 2021 at the age of 82. Don is survived by his 2 children, son Donnie Carter and his daughter, Sonya Allen and her husband, Tim: his beloved granddaughter Anna Gwinn as well as many extended family and friends especially Dickie Engleman and Tim Cathey.
Don was born on October 22, 1938, in Selma, VA to Mabel VanBuren and Alonzo Carter. In addition to his parents Don was preceded in death by his Aunt Mary Jones. He joined the United States Army and was a Green Beret during Vietnam. He owned many businesses throughout his life with the last being the Alleghany Printing Company and retiring from the Dairy Bar in Clifton Forge, VA. He was a board member of the Clifton Forge Main Street serving as the Mayor of Clifton Forge for two terms. He was also a member of the Clifton Forge Coffee Club. He served as the Exalted Ruler of the Clifton Forge Elks Club, Board member of Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, a huge fan of UVA and was a season ticket holder for many years.

So sorry to hear of Don’s passing. I knew him many years ago. He was a very kind and caring young man but most of all he was a handsome true Southern Gentleman and a good friend.Don was stationed at Fort Gordon , Georgia. He proudly and honorary served his Country. Thank you Don for your service. Prayers and sympathy for Don’s family.

With sincere sympathy to Donnie’s family. I went to Central High School with Donnie, a quiet, well liked boy. He was known by many in Clifton Forge, especially when he served as mayor, and was the owner of the DairyBar. We have lost another fine friend. God bless each of his family.

Don was such a sweet man. My favorite memory is dancing with him at Sonya’s wedding. He was funny and kind. Prayers of healing and peace for Sonia and Donnie and family.
