Herbert Dinkins

February 19, 1934 - April 25, 2023

Herbert Dinkins earned his heavenly wings on April 25, 2023. He was born on February 19, 1934, to the late Willie and Pearl Dinkins in Camden, SC.

Herbert moved to Washington, DC and met his beloved wife, Polly Ann Rixey. They were blessed with six children, Bettina, Herbert Jr., Joann, John, Anthony, and Antonio. He was a devoted husband and father and worked various jobs to provide for his family. He worked in construction business for many years and helped to build several area landmarks, such as Tysons Corner Center (Mall) in Fairfax County, VA and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Herbert loved the Lord and spreading the uncompromised gospel of Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior as a child. He was a faithful member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Goode, VA, where he was a deacon. Herbert had a compassionate heart and regularly ministered to patients and staff at the Carrington Nursing Home in Lynchburg, VA, sharing scriptures, singing praise and worship music, and playing his beloved harmonica. He was a faithful servant and for many years served disabled, elderly, and less fortunate residents in the Big Island community as a volunteer with Bedford Ride. He would regularly transport them to medical appointments, pharmacies for prescriptions, and grocery stores. He used this time to minister to those in need and spread the gospel. He also loved spending hours tending to his garden, planting flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and tinkering around his home.

Herbert leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife, Polly; children: Bettina Dinkins, Herbert Jr. Dinkins, Joann Dinkins, John Dinkins, Anthony Dinkins; grandchildren: Jawanna Ellis, Shantay Dinkins, Donald Christopher McCann, Chrishanna Simms, Demetria Dinkins, Reniya Dinkins, Desmond Dinkins, and a host of great-grandchildren; stepmother: Bertha Dinkins; brothers: Willie Dinkins, Joseph Dinkins, Frierson Dinkins, Anthony B. Dinkins, Richmond Dinkins; step-brother: Amaziah Diggs; Sisters: Ruby Mae McLeod, Mary Sanders, Rose Grant, Pearl Armstrong, Parolyn Dinkins, Ann Heyward, Emma Jackson, Nancy Dinkins; Daughter in-laws: Darlene Dinkins, Gloria Dinkins; Grandson in-law: Troy Simms and many loving friends. In addition to his parents, Herbert is predeceased by his son Antonio Dinkins and brother Sidney Dinkins.

Herbert will be deeply missed and loved for the years to come.
