Marie Mitchell Tweedy

January 7, 1948 - October 30, 2022

Marie Mitchell Tweedy, 74, of Rustburg, Virginia, passed away at her home on October 30, 2022.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on January 7, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Sonnie F. Mitchell, Jr. and Virginia Powell Mitchell.  She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Marvin; her son Keith of Richmond; daughter Jennifer Tweedy Johnson (Stuart), grandchildren Blane and Claire, and granddog Fran Fran of Amherst. She is also survived by her six younger siblings Frank Mitchell (Kay); David Mitchell (Donna), Warren Mitchell, Ann Mitchell Tice (Dennis); Debbie Mitchell Cash (Sam), Janet Mitchell Ashby (Jeff); as well as close nieces, nephews, and friends.

At fifteen, Marie began her first job waitressing at Jack’s Place where she met Marvin and their fifty-five year love affair began.  After graduating salutatorian from William Campbell High School, she attended Radford College.  She began working as a reporter for the Lynchburg News & Advance in 1969.  She worked many long hours to later advance to city editor.  Those late nights often meant washing ball uniforms at midnight and signing permission slips in the morning, but she always made sure it was done.  In 2000, she retired from her bookkeeping position at Glenn A. Trent. She was a faithful member of Rustburg United Methodist Church and a member of The Woodmen of the World.

If you know Marie then you know the love she had for her family was like no other.  One of the greatest joys in her life was becoming Mimi to Blane and Claire.  She strived to never miss a ballgame, awards assembly, or an opportunity to brag about her grandbabies.  She often said they held her heart in their hands. She enjoyed spoiling her family on birthdays and holidays by making everyone’s favorite dish and searching year-long for the perfect present. She loved trips to the beach to eat lots of shrimp and hear the ocean waves.

A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Thursday, November 3, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. When I think of Marie, I think of laughter, fun and a wit no one could match. She filled the room with warmth and love..always ready for the next adventure even if her physical body wasn't. Such fond memories of Hwy 12, Nags Head shopping and every get-together, for she never knew a stranger. Truly blessed to call her friend. May God Bless
