Showing your sympathy is one of the hardest things to do. You just never know what kind of gestures will bring appreciation, and which ones will bring tears and hurt. Other than physically being there for them, you can also consider giving them a creative sympathy message. It doesn’t have to be confined to some nice words on a card, come up with a sympathy message that communicates something more than words can express. Here are some creative ideas using t-shirts to send the perfect sympathy message.
Send a Sympathy Message with More than Words
Shirt Quilt
Gather the shirts your deceased friend or family member used to wear and put them together into a shirt quilt. This is a good way to take some of the memories surrounding your loved one and make them into something that will last.
Shirt Pillows
Gather the shirts your loved one used to wear – collared shirts look great – then turn them into pillows. You can attach a saying like, “This is a shirt I used to wear whenever you hold it know I am there.” This is a thoughtful message and you can make enough for all the children or grandchildren so they can have a way to remember their loved ones who have passed away.
Shirt Teddy Bears
Another creative sympathy message you can create using the shirts of a loved one is a teddy bear. Visit here to learn how to make a teddy bear with a shirt. This is a good option when creating a sympathy message for younger children.
Shirt Patches
You can also cut patches from the shirts of your loved one and attach them to other stuffed animals, pillows, etc. This is a good option if you do not have access to as many shirts.
Shirt Necklaces, Bracelets, or Headbands
For a small but wearable keepsake, you can use the shirts of a loved one to create necklaces, bracelets, or even headbands. Learn how to make them.
Heartfelt and Useful Messages
Sending a sympathy card with a heartfelt message is a good first step. But if you really want to show that you care – include specific offers for help. It is usually difficult for those going through a hard time to think of the specific ways another person can help them. Come up with some ways you can help and include those offers in your message. Here are some ideas:
- Doing the dishes
- Babysitting the children
- Night out
- Grocery shopping

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Billy (Abner) was my favorite cousin when we were growing up. My family and his used to visit each other almost every Sunday.
Berk and Esther joined our Sunday School class in 1978. Berk and I had many discussions about Bluegrass music but I didn’t really get into his life until the last few months he lived in Radcliff. We went out to eat several Fridays and we always wound up at his home after lunch going thru his notebooks chocked full of pictures, notes, letters, concert promotions, and thank yous with and from past Bluegrass stars and even Elvis. I was always compelled to stay for hours and I always hated to depart my captivating host. I was very saddened the day I learned that it was necessary for Berk to move from Radcliff to receive increased care in his beloved Lyunchburg, VA. I would like to, extend my deepest sympathy to each of the Nelson children on the passing of your dad. Because I have known several of his sons , I also know that Dr. Nelson was simply an outstanding father, for he helped raise six remarkable children. He led an extremely productive life, one that was filled with love, faith and strong convictions. He excelled whether he was a pastor, scholar, teacher, athlete or marine. I know you will miss him.
May God bless and comfort each of you now and always.
